Abstract

Nanoclay is an innovative nanofiller with appealing qualities such as strong compatibility with a wide range of polymers and excellent mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. This work reveals the fabrication of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites by adding various wt % (0, 1.25, 2.50, 3.75) nanoclay in epoxy using the vacuum bagging technique. Mechanical properties such as flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and tensile strength tests were performed on neat CFRP and nanoclay embedded CFRP composite to determine the effect of adding nanoclay on the mechanical properties of CFRP. The result obtained from these tests concludes an increase in flexural, ILSS, and tensile strength continuously up to 2.5 wt% of nanoclay after further addition of nanoclay, these properties decrease.
