Abstract

ABSTRACT The experimental work deals with the investigation of the performance, combustion and emission characteristics of a single-cylinder diesel engine by using the Chlorella vulgaris microalgae biodiesel with the addition of the Al2O3 nanoparticles. A Chlorella vulgaris microalgae was taken for the biodiesel production and biodiesel blends were prepared by mixing the 20% microalgae biodiesel with the 80% diesel (CVBD20) and various dosages of Al2O3 nanoparticles were added. The BTHE for the CVBD20ANP25, CVBD20ANP50 CVBD20ANP75, CVBD20ANP100 fuels was increased by 1.15%, 3.62%, 6.5% and 4.34% compared to the CVBD20 fuel. The maximum reduction of NOx emissions was observed for the CVBD20ANP50 fuel by 4.21% compared to the biodiesel blend. The HC emissions were decreased by 14.47% for CVBD20ANP75 fuel and CO emissions are decreased by 19.5% for CVBD20ANP100 fuel when compared to the CVBD20 fuel sample. The smoke opacity was decreased by 4.7% for CVBD20ANP50 fuel than the biodiesel blend at full load conditions.
