Int Arch Allergy Immunol. 2017;173(2):99–104 To determine the intrinsic and external environmental factors that influence the development of immunoglobulin E (IgE) sensitization in a westernized population. A cohort of students ages 12 to 21 years was recruited from schools in Salzburg, Austria. Subjects were randomly selected and enrolled in the cross-sectional study from October 2013 to May 2014. Serum samples were obtained from the 501 Austrian adolescents participating in the study. ImmunoCAP assays were performed on the serum samples to identify specific IgE values to 112 different allergens (including pollens, mite allergens, animals, and food).
