Abstract
The influence of the site and route of injection on the depot effect of procaine penicillin in dogs uas investigated. The drug uias administered either intramuscularly (M. longissimus dorsi, M. semitendineus/M. gracilis. M. gluteus medius) or subcutaneously (lateral thorax and neck). The depot effect (> 0.1 lU/ml of serum at 24 h) was found in a higher percentage of cases following injection into the M. longissimus dorsi (77%), than following injection into the other intramuscu1ar sites (33 and 20%, respectively). The probability of a depot effect was highest following subcutaneous injection in the lateral thorax region, whereas subcutaneous injection in the neck resulted in a depot effect in 60% of the cases.
