Abstract
Motor oil properties deteriorate because of oxidation of the oil molecules and subsequent conversion of the oxidation products. It would be presumed that the oil oxidation rate would be proportional to the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the oil and present in the zone of contact of the oil with the gas medium. Data have been reported* on the difference among gases in their ability to dissolve in a liquid and on the mutual influence of gas-medium components on their solubility in the liquid. Hence we see that the composition of the gas medium in contact with a motor oil will have a substantial influence on the change in oil properties in the process of oxidation.
