Abstract

Theoretical considerations and measurements on a thin plane parallel liquid crystal plate show that the fringes of equal inclination instead of the critical angle of total reflection must be used for a correct determination of the surface tilt angle. The importance of this effect with respect to the strength of anchoring in a liquid crystal hybrid layer is documented.
