Abstract

Influence of fertilizers on the rhizosphere microflora of maize was studied. The fertilizers used for the treatments were N, P, K and Zn in different combinations. Effect of these fertilizer treatments on the population of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, N-fixers, P-solubilizing, and Zn-solubilizing microorganisms, AM fungal root colonization and spore numbers in the rhizosphere were enumerated. The dehydrogenase activity of the rhizosphere samples was also determined. The results showed that the chemical fertilizers have an adverse effect on the population of rhizosphere microorganisms which was also supported by the reduction of dehydrogenase activity.
