It is shown that the presence of electron-positron pairs can drastically reduce the amplitude and wavelength of electrostatic wakefields that are generated by coherent, short electromagnetic wave packets in unmagnetized plasmas. The relevance of our work to laboratory and cosmic plasmas is pointed out.
