Abstract

The machining method for micro-holes with complicated internal feature by utilizing shape transfer of ECM was examined and the characteristics were investigated in this study. In experiments, the electrode with a tapered shape was inserted into the pre-drilled hole of the workpiece, then a machining voltage was applied between the electrode and the workpiece. Also, the electrolyte flow, bubble generation and the material dissolution in the inter-electrode area were observed with a high video camera. From experiments, it was found that (1) it is possible to transfer the shape of the tool electrode to the pre-machined hole, and (2) When the electrolyte is pressured through the inter-electrode area, the bubbles concentrate at the outlet of the electrolyte. This concentration has a significant influence on the machining amount.
