Abstract

Selected divalent cations were surveyed to examine their suitability as a co-dopant in Cr : Y 3Al 5O 12 for the promotion of Cr 4+. The only successful co-dopants were Ca and Mg. The following co-dopants failed to generate Cr 4+ in significant concentrations: Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Sr. The lack of success in the transition metal dopants was attributed to the large crystal field stabilization energy for Cr 3+ in an octahedral site. Reasons why the other co-dopants were unsuccessful are also discussed.
