Abstract

We investigate the influence of dc electric field on the collective fluctuation of main-chain ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polyesters having a mesogenic p,p'-bibenzoate unit by dynamic electrooptical measurement. The soft mode, which is observed around the SmA-to-SmC* phase transition temperature, is suppressed by the application of a dc electric field while the Goldstone mode remains active. Because mesogens are linked together in a main-chain liquid-crystalline polymer, the soft mode associated with tilt fluctuation is prevented under a dc field.
