Abstract

SummaryThe l-cystine supplementation when fed with a proper concentration of BAPN in a commercial diet will prolong the survival of treated rats, reduce the incidence of death from aortic rupture and partially counteract the weight suppressing influence of this lathyrogen. Some of the BAPN intoxication therefore is mediated by the production of an increased need for more l-cystine. The mechanism by which the requirement for dietary l-cystine is increased by the ingestion of BAPN remains to be clarified.
