Abstract

This paper deals with the effect of cutting friction on the surface properties in diamond turning of brittle single crystals. Experimental results indicate that the anisotropy of the surface roughness decreases with increasing cutting friction which is related to the mechanism of brittle–ductile transitions in surface generation. As cutting friction increases, the brittle single crystals are more susceptible to the brittle fracture than ductile mode cutting. This finding provides an important means for the improvement of surface quality in diamond turning of brittle single crystals.
