Abstract

Clinical inertia (CI) is defi ned as the physicians’ error in diagnose, start and intensifi cation of treatment when it is indicated, as well as patient follow-up. It is a common problem in dealing with patients with chronical asymptomatic diseases. The degree of inertia known in these pathologies is very high.CI depends on the three factors which intervene in the whole healthcare process: physician, patient and health system. It has been estimated that the physician's contribution is 50%, patient's is 30% and the health system's is 20%.Among the measures to reduce CI, medical education, economic incentives for professionals, usage of audits, physician-patient relationship improvement, computerized reminders and overall healthcare organization improvement have been assessed.
