Abstract

Interactions initiated by 7 GeV π −-mesons from the Dubna synchrophasotron were studied by emulsion and bubble chamber techniques. With appropriate criteria we selected in the emulsion 215 inelastic pion-nucleon interactions and 178 in the propane bubble chamber. Having investigated the events with small multiplicity we found that for the one-prong events and for the two-prong events with a secondary proton most of the emitted pions have momenta in the c.m.s. greater than 0.6 GeV/ c. Furthermore their angular distributions in the c.m.s. are strongly peaked in the forward direction. Assuming that only one pion is produced in the collisions above mentioned we find that only an unessential part of the interactions could have proceeded via the formation of a nucleon isobar. The kinematical data of the collisions with Δ 2 < (2.5 m π ) 2 are found to be in good agreement with those calculated for the process π − + N → N + π ∗ . The cross section for π −-proton interactions with formation of a ππ-isobar is about 1.5 mb.
