Abstract

Animal by-products have been a major contributor to the growth and expansion of the world’s pet-food industry and have supplied the majority of the proteins, fats, and minerals, plus significant quantities of vitamins for pets through the years. The pet food industry is big business with America’s 52 million dogs and 56 million cats consuming foods costing about $8 billion in annual sales and totaling 6·7 million tons produced (Table 13-1). There are an estimated 20 000 dog and cat foods produced in the United States with 1800–1900 registered in Texas (R. Sellers, Pers. Comm.) In the US more than 36 billions lbs of inedible raw materials must be disposed of each year; thus, the rendering industry is a valuable adjunct to environmental protection and safety (Brown et al., 1990).
