Abstract

The landscape of food safety concerns within the pet food industry has changed dramatically in the United States in recent years. This has primarily been driven by changes in type of pet food offered on the market including the composition, ingredient sourcing, processing characteristics, and packaging formats. Changes in the primary ingredients in pet food and transition to global sourcing have added further risks and complications. This chapter will explore past, present, and emerging food safety issues in the US pet food market. It will describe the shift in the pet food market from high-grain products to high-meat products and the introduction of jerky style pet treats. As a result of this evolution, the dominant food safety concerns in the pet food industry have been redefined, and this will be demonstrated by reviewing the pet food recalls over the last several years.
