Abstract

ABSTRACT A 64 x 64 Mercury-Cadmium-Telluride (MCT) focal-plane array detector attached to a Fourier transform infrared (FT-fR)microscope has been used to spectroscopically image a cross section of a laminated polymer film in the fmgerprmt region ofthe infrared spectrum (1800-900 cm-i). Image contrast is achieved due to the intrinsic chemical nature of the sample at eachpixel location in the image. This technique is clearly able to identify the individual layers in this polymer film laminate.Infrared spectra of individual pixels in a 7.5-tm-thick adhesive tie layer of this polymer laminate show no interference fromadjacent layers. Keywords: FT-IR, microspectroscopy, focal-plane array, MCT, polymer laminates 1. INTRODUCTION The combination of an infrared (IR) focal-plane array (FPA) detector and a Fourier transform infrared (FT-fR) microscope isa powerful one for obtaining spectroscopic images with unprecedented image fidelity.'6 Use of a step-scanning FT-JR spectrometer with an array detector placed at an image plane of the JR microscope enables full infrared spectra (or
