Abstract

This article will introduce the basic concepts of inductive signals and progenitor fates during osteogenesis. A brief overview of skeletal development, adult skeletal homeostasis, and the discovery of mesenchymal stem cells in adult tissues will introduce the major concepts behind our understanding of the origins of osteoprogenitors. The main inductive signals that have been shown to induce osteogenesis, and strategies that enhance bone formation for the purposes of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine will also be reviewed. Finally, this article will cover emerging techniques for bone tissue engineering that make use of osteogenic inductive signals and progenitor fates.
