Abstract

In this paper, application of artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) surfaces for increasing the inductance of printed inductors is investigated through fullwave simulations. Two AMC structures are designed that have periodic (design A) and non-periodic (design B) spiral geometries. They exhibit multiple resonance frequencies thereby providing AMC operation at multiple frequency bands. Inclusion of these surfaces underneath a simple loop inductor yields inductance enhancement by 53.7% and 63.6% for design A and design B, respectively. As a result of this method, multiple regions of inductance increase appear in the inductance plot. It is also observed that quality factor is reduced in comparison to the standard inductor case at the regions of AMC operation. This can be minimized by adjusting the operation frequency but at the expense of a less significant inductance enhancement.
