Abstract

A series of radiochemical experiments have been conducted to determine the amount of naturally occurring fission that might take place in thorium ores. 99Mo was chosen as the fission product to be an indicator for fission events of 232Th. Boron was added to the thorium systems in order to increase the neutron flux of the systems via (α, n) reactions. Equilibrium activity of 99Mo, an average for two samples, was observed to be 6 × 10−5 dps/g Th from the aqueous thorium-boron system. The average effective fast neutron flux determined was about 8 × 10−3n/sec/cm2 for two samples. The B/Th ratio (atom/atom) was 0.1267.
