Abstract

The paper presents some results from research of the Polish archaeological project conducted in several canyons in the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Mesa Verde region of southwestern Colorado, USA. It focuses on reconstruction of settlement structure and socio-cultural changes in Ancestral Pueblo community from 13th century A.D. as well as on documentation (mainly with advanced digital methods) and analysis of Native American rock art from different time periods. Rock art consists of petroglyphs and paintings that include Ancestral Pueblo and historic Ute tribes, but also Euro-American inscriptions left close to Native American rock art panels. One of the aims of the project is also to reconstruct the relationships between the site locations, architecture, rock art, and the surrounding landscape.
