Abstract

Opportunistic infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV infection. The best strategy for preventing them is appropriate antiretroviral treatment with a good adherence on the part of the patient. However, when there is a decrease in CD4 lymphocytes below 200cells/μl, primary and secondary prevention of opportunistic infections is essential for improving quality of life and decreasing its morbidity and mortality in these patients.
