Abstract

Analytical tests are crucial for the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up on thyroid disease. Universal thyroid function screening is not recommended at present; its determination may be indicated based on the patient's specific symptoms and situations. An isolated TSH measurement is currently considered the standard for screening and the aposteriori determination of free T4 and T3 is indicated depending on the result. Likewise, the determination of antibodies is essential for the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid dysfunction. Common errors in interpretation include the presence of non-thyroidal disease, immunoassay interference, or certain drugs. This protocol provides practical guidelines for interpreting and using tests in thyroid disease, highlighting key diagnostic considerations.
