Abstract

Latent tuberculous infection refers to the immune reaction against strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that are viable but not transmissible. They are significant in that some affected individuals will develop active tuberculous disease in their lifetime. Identifying patients with tuberculous infection and their correct treatment will result in a reduction in the cases of tuberculous disease. It will also lead to a reduction in transmission. The current available methods for diagnosing tuberculous infection are based on skin tests or in vitro assay measuring interferon-gamma release by the lymphocytes. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and will be used according to factors associated with the host such as immunosuppression and age, among others.
