Abstract

Oxygen therapy is defined as the therapeutic use of oxygen and consists of its administration at higher concentrations than in ambient air, with the intention to treat or prevent hypoxia complications. The indication for the use of home oxygen therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is severe hypoxemia (PaO2 <55mm Hg or PaO2 levels between 55 and 59mm Hg with evidence of pulmonary hypertension, polyglobulia with a hematocrit greater than 55 %, chronic cor pulmonale or cardiac rhythm disorders). The therapy should be used for at least 16 hours a day, including a period at night. The choice of oxygen source should be made based on technical, cost and suitability criteria.
