Abstract

In the work, a study was carried out of the state of relay protection at hydroelectric power plants (HPP) in North Ossetia-Alania and related entities, which revealed a strong degree of deterioration of the installed electromechanical relay protections and numerous violations of the established standard operating periods. It was revealed that microprocessor-based relay protection systems have a significant advantage over the electromechanical ones currently in operation at hydroelectric power plants, which consists in the possibility of self-diagnosis, documenting all the processes that take place, which will greatly facilitate the analysis and search for the causes of any emergency, multifunctionality and a number of less significant advantages. Thus, the re-equipment of the HPP for a modern microprocessor-based relay protection and automation system will significantly increase the reliability of protection and facilitate the analysis of any emergency situations.
