Abstract
The specialty of palliative care has developed rapidly in the last two decades, as evidenced by the growth of specialist services, tertiary education programmes and recognition of palliative care as a specialty within professional colleges. In planning cancer services for the future, palliative care is now recognized as an integral component of these services. This acceptance of palliative care, while perhaps not complete, has been largely due to the efforts of committed health professionals from many disciplines, including nursing. The shared philosophy of what was palliative care practice enabled these individuals to argue with one voice. Recent changes in the practice of palliative care bring into question whether this shared view of palliative care remains.
