Abstract
Background: As we advance toward the goal of single embryo transfer to eliminate the burden of multiple pregnancies embryo selection becomes of paramount importance. It is widely accepted in the literature that early initiation of the first embryonic cleavage is positively correlated with implantation potential. In contrast advanced cleavage in day three embryos showed a negative correlation with normal blastocyst development (1). With preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for nuclear aneuploidy becoming more routine, valuable insight can be gained into the possible mechanism of embryonic loss in advanced cleavage day three embryos.
