Abstract

[U− 14C]Glycine was incorporated into hydroxymethylpyrimidine and thiamine by a thiamine regulatory mutant of Escherichia coli with 5.1 and 2.5 × dilutions, respectively. The incorporation of 14C radioactivity into the pyrimidine moiety of thiamine was effectively decreased by the addition of hydroxymethylpyrimidine to the medium in the presence of adenine, whereas the incorporation into the thiazole moiety was decreased by thiazole in the presence of phenylalanine.
