Abstract

To investigate the incidence of Brucella ovis in sheep, samples were collected from 22 males and 182 females raised in 26 farms located in 19 different cities in Sao Paulo. They all had a history of some kind of reproductive problem, such as abortion, impairment of fertility, neonatal deaths, delivery of weak neonates, distocic delivery, vaginal discharge, orchitis, epididymitis, testicular degeneration, and lack of sexual desire. The samples analysed included: 204 blood samples, 15 semen samples, 16 aborted fetuses, 4 placenta samples, and 12 vaginal mucous samples. The percentage of serologically positive females for Brucella ovis was 1,96%. It was not possible to isolate Brucella ovis from samples submitted to the microbiological examination, although Actinobacillus seminis was isolated from one of the semen samples, which is considered a differential diagnosis for ovine brucelosis.
