Abstract

Ganglioneuromas are unusual, slow-growing benign tumors, which arise from the neural crest cells of the autonomic nervous system and are commonly located in the retroperitoneum or posterior mediastinum. We present an autopsy case of an 18-year-old male who presented with a history of vomiting and unresponsiveness after having dinner. The patient was brought to the emergency department of our institute where he was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not be revived. On histopathological examination of the adrenal gland, an encapsulated extra-adrenal tumor comprising mature ganglion cells embedded in a Schwannian stroma was noted. On immunohistochemistry, the ganglion cells and the stromal cells showed immunoreactivity for S100P and NSE. A diagnosis of extra-adrenal ganglioneuroma was rendered. The cause of death was aspirated material in the lung. Ganglioneuromas are rare tumors that are usually asymptomatic, and most of the cases are detected incidentally on the autopsy.
