Abstract
Arabian foals are more susceptible to adenovirus infection because of the generalized immunodeficiency resulting from a genetic defects (1, 2) . The disease is characterized by pneumonia, intermittent fever, and high mortality. Severe lymphopenia has accompanied the fatal infection in foals (3). The growth and multiplication of adenoviruses, in general, has been studied mainly in suspension cultures of KB, Hela and other renal tissue culture system (4). Whether a similar multiplication cycle is occurring in vivo has not been determined.Pulmonary tissues from a necropsied arabian horse were processed for electron microscopy. Thick sections of infected lung show numerous intranuclear inclusion bodies in the bronchial epithelium. Serial thin sectioning of the same area indicates occurrence of various developmental stages of adenovirus multiplication. This report summarizes our morphologic observation made in vivo and compare to what is known in vitro system.
