Abstract

IMMUNOLOGICAL investigations of the malaria parasite have indicated that effective protective immunity is acquired only against the erythrocytic parasites as they reach maturity. It has been shown1,2 that chronic malarious sera only agglutinate the mature schizont and that the most effective antigen is derived from the mature erythrocytic form3. Gel precipitin reactions have also shown that stronger reactions are obtained against schizont rather than trophozoite antigen of P. falciparum when these are diffused against immune sera4. Furthermore, passive transfer of acquired immunity is more effective against mature than immature forms5.
