Abstract

This article discusses an in‐service training program sponsored by the Baltimore County Department of Public Works to train its engineering aides and draftsmen in the engineering sciences. The four year program was started in 1956 with the purpose of advancing the engineering skills of the students and stimulate their interest for further study. All subjects which are a normal part of a civil engineering course are touched upon, with special emphasis given to municipal engineering. Upon successful completion of each year's course of study, the student would be given credit for a year's experience in his position, thus qualifying him for consideration in the next higher position. The article discusses the curriculum, and describes how instructors are encouraged, after observing/appraising the abilities of the students, to make recommendations for promoting the more competent students to positions of greater responsibility.
