Abstract
The combination of a mistake made by Lepsius with the Oracle of year 7 whm mswt has always prevented Egyptologists from acknowledging Herihor as a real king: apparently he predeceased the king he served and was succeeded as High Priest of Amun by his son, Piankh, in year 7 of the Renaissance. Now that Jansen-WinkeIn has reversed the order of Piankh and Herihor it finally becomes possible to accept Herihor as a true king, albeit not as the direct successor of Ramses XI Menmare. Evidence from the oracle of Herihor, the report of Wenamun and the Temple of Khonsu shows that following the death of this ruler, Herihor continued to serve as High Priest under a Pharaoh Pinuzem for ca. 10 years before he ascended to the throne himself to rule for some 20 years. The article ends with a discussion of the ways the Banishment stele can be incorporated in this new chronology.
