Abstract

We thank Dr. Marshall for his valuable comments on our article. We greatly appreciate his perspective on gender equity and the importance of mindfulness in his journey to becoming a gender equity ally. In our work with IWill at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), a critical and frequently asked question is how to engage men in gender equity efforts. We have found that men are generally not comfortable interacting with gender equity work and that helping men engage can be challenging and conversation intensive. We hope that others might be inspired by Dr. Marshall’s personal experience and recognize the importance of being “comfortable with being uncomfortable” as a first step in addressing inequity. As we continue our work in promoting gender equity at our institution, we will look to incorporate the author’s suggestions about mindfulness practices into our future deliberations about IWill MCW.
