Abstract
This study explores the relationship between Constitutionalism and traditional values within the Nigerian society. It also examines the contradictory relationship between the Nigerian constitution and the present day government system; and that, with the already existing traditional government systems. Based on this examination, it analyses how these relationships have become the most threatening impediment to Nigeria’s effort at achieving Constitutionalism. Bridging the gap between these two issues and finding a way for the country to review the past so as to understand the future with regards to Constitutionalism, is the importance of this paper. With the country’s celebration of the achievement of five decades of Independence in 2010, this research shows how those things which have the power to unite and stabilize the society- Constitution, Culture, Tradition, and Government Institutions- also have the power to not just de-stabilize the society, but inhibit its progress. Conclusively, it notes that achieving Constitutionalism in Nigeria is possible if the nation utilizes its Custom as a complementary resource in its law-making process.
