Abstract

Julia Moore was a bad poet. But as far as we know she did not intend to be funny. If history remembers her at all, it is because of a relatively obscure allusion to her work in Mark Twain's Following the Equator and because in all probability Julia Moore's poetry served as the model for Emmaline Grangerford's famous Ode to Stephen Dowling Bots, Dec'd. in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
