Abstract

AbstractCan literary genre influence how gender is portrayed? This is a particularly intriguing question when applied to drama, a form which implies the physical presence of actors and audience. Works of traditional Chinese fiction and drama tend to recycle plots back and forth, and thus provide many avenues for exploring how genre conventions might affect gender conceptions. One of the richest resources for a discussion of this type is the cluster of works related to the Three Kingdoms story cycle which includes two popular narratives, twenty-two short plays in the ZAJU form, and the great Ming novel ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS.
