Abstract

Impurity segregation at a ∑ = 5 tilt grain boundary in transition metals (α-Fe) has been studied using a tight-binding type electronic theory. The present theoretical calculation takes into account the effects of applied stress as well. Recent experimental observations on grain boundary segregation under applied stresses are qualitatively interpreted from the viewpoint of a chemical interaction between the solute atom and grain boundaries.
