Abstract

Within a traditional ballet curriculum, improvisation is not a skill that is often taught, practiced, or performed. However, ballet needs to evolve continually to avoid becoming stagnant and archival in form. Learning to improvise within the codified structures of this art form will allow students to take ownership of their dancing, and to find a thoughtful and nuanced form of personal expression. This article identifies five strategies that I have used to introduce and develop an exploratory perspective within the ballet classroom, both in conservatory and dance studio settings.
