Abstract
The study consists in comparing the thermal behavior of two solar water heaters: a conventional solar water heater and an PCM solar water heater. The aim of this work is to numerically study the importance of phase change materials (PCMs), by analyzing their potential for storing solar energy by latent heat of a phase change material. in an installation to produce domestic hot water. The mathematical model used to simulate the phase change in the PCM is based on the enthalpy formulation of the energy conservation equation. The finite difference method is used for the numerical resolution of the selected model. To validate the mathematical model, a comparison of the numerical predictions made with an analytical solution. The results show that the energy stored by PCM solar water heater is almost 320% more than the energy stored by conventional solar water heater.
