Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the use of memoir to improve the students’ ability to write recount paragraphsat the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli. The researcher used quasi experimental research design that involved two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The population was the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli.The sample was selected by using cluster sampling technique.They were XI IPS 3 as the experimental group and XI IPS 2 as the control one, which consisted of 39 and 39 students. The experimental group was given the treatment, while the control group was not. The technique of data collection was tests (pre-test and post-test). In analyzing the data, the researcher counted the mean score of the post test. The mean score of the post-test at the experimental group is 68, while the mean score of the post-test at the control group is 59. These show the significant difference of both groups. That is 9. It was proven by using t-test formula. It means that the use of memoir is effective in improving the students’ ability to write recount paragraphs at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli.
