Abstract

Present research focuses on improving precipitation estimates over orographic regions in India by synergistic use of multi-spectral satellite observations and rain gauge data. For this purpose, precipitation estimates from satellite observations are integrated with rain gauge data using bias adjustment technique. Derived precipitation is compared with rain gauge based gridded product over India. Results report an improvement in precipitation estimates over orographic region like Western Ghats and the Himalayan foothills. Validation with rain gauges has also been performed in this study. Validation results point out significant improvement in error statistics for derived precipitation from integrated observations of rain gauge and multi-spectral satellite using objective analysis as compared to those from multi-spectral satellite observations. Research presented in this study highlights the importance of integrating precipitation information from multiple sources using sophisticated tools to improve precipitation estimates over complex terrains.
