Abstract
The paper presents an assessment of the current state of higher education in the regions of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific—drawn largely from recent deliberations in Unesco sponsored meeting and research reports. The importance of improving the quality and relevance of work carried out in this sector of education is emphasised. The author builds upon this analysis to outline Unesco's priorities and future programme of action in the field of higher education.
