Abstract

Qena - Safaga road is considered to be one of the most important roads connecting southern Egypt governorates to the Red-Sea.The swelling action of the subgrade of this road ( between Km 18 to Km 32 ) has led to many cracklings' of the pavements, building foundations and water lines. Sediments had been observed. This action led to a heave and cracking of pavements, building foundations, water lines. This research deals with an investigation of the important properties of the road subgrade soil including plasticity, unconfined compressive strength and swelling pressure. The research also deals with the effect of hydrated lime addition and curing time on improving the important properties of such kind of subgrade, expansive marly clay. Using the optimum lime content of 6% by the same, the properties showed many satisfactory results. Plasticity and swelling pressure values decreased and unconfined compressive strength value increased. Also, the test results showed the strong effect of the curing time on enhancing this type of subgrade. Keywords: Swelling Subgrade, Expansive soil, hydrated lime, microstructural analysis, unconfined strength, California bearing ratio.
