Abstract

Summary This paper describes a method to increase the fatigue life of a drill collar by reducing the height of a pin's last-engaged thread (LET). The effectiveness of the method was verified with finite-element analysis (FEA), and the results were evaluated by full-size fatigue tests. Also, the practicality of the redesigned connection was confirmed through overmakeup, make-and-break, and full-size tensile testing.
