Abstract

In this work, a fluorine coating material has been employed to improve membrane performance during membrane distillation process. The coating operation is easy and fast without additional modification of membrane morphology nor chemistry. After coating, pore structure of the membrane has remained unchanged, while surface free energy of the membrane has been drastically lowered. Low surface free energy endows the coated membrane with exceptional high anti-wetting and anti-scaling property. In membrane distillation test with the presence of surfactant or scaling agent, the coated membrane has significantly outperformed the pristine membrane. Moreover, the coated membrane has exhibited excellent performance in water recovery test from synthetic seawater, showing great promise for practical applications.
