Abstract

During the interwar period, Polish film productions accounted for less than 10 percent of cinema programs in Warsaw, while foreign companies dominated the market. An important position was held by the German Ufa film company. Inspired by the interdisciplinary spatial turn and New Cinema History, the article focusses on Ufa’s business activities with respect to both its global ambitions and their realization on the local market in the multicultural city of Warsaw. By combining Ufa’s corporate history with the history of German-Polish relations and the social and cultural history of cinema goers, the article contributes to an inter-disciplinary and transnational expansion of research perspectives.
